bad knees

Is there other exercises you could suggest instead of lunges, they are really hard on my knees, I am overweight and just started exercising but realize how important they are.

You could try them and bend your knees a little less with each “lunge.” Squats are great, try them with either a barbell on your back or dumbbells in your hands. Doing step ups, or stairs is similar to the lunge as well.
