Comfort at the gym

I am 5'5" and weight 122 lbs. I guess I consider myself skinny fat so I need to tone really bad. I run 2 miles only about once a week. At one point I was able to run about 4 miles three times a week. I am working on buiding my endurance up for that again. I am serious about wanting to tone and do not feel comfortable going to the gym. In the free weight area, everyone is already tone, the guys and girls. So I don’t want to get in the way. I would like to start at home and would like to know what to buy. So far I have 5lb weights and an ab coaster. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Your feeling is understandable, but I do wish you would feel more comfortable at the gym. I myself am a professional bodybuilder and when I see a total beginner in the gym trying hard to better him/herself I actually feel proud for that person and would lend my help if they had questions. But, as to your query, you can do very well with a set of DB’s that go from 2.5 lbs up to 25 lbs in 2.5 lb increments. In addition a 15 lb curling bar and some weight plates with collars to lock them in place would be great. Perhaps a pair of 2.5, 5, and 10 lb plates would be a nice start. If you have room for a bench with adjustable uprights that also inclines this would also add onto your options.
