Without knowing what exactly is causing the pain, it would be hard for me to say. Sometimes it can be an overuse injury, or from progressing your workouts faster than your body can adjust. Usually caused by joint hip and knee motions such as running or biking or when the quads are used more.

Also, it could be IT Band Syndrome. It sounds like you are doing all the right things, but there could be a misalignment of the knee so it’s best to get it checked by your Physical Therapist or Chiropractor who can more closely check it out and diagnose and treat before it worsens.

Pretty common areas would be to stretch the quads and hip flexors, and to strengthen the gluteus medius. Other treatments would be icing, or soft tissue work/massage. But if there is an alignment problem, it needs to be corrected.
